I have to admit, I jumped into this project pretty blindly. I figured that my little Juke Joint would be small and I'd have about a year to have to worry about bandwidth, web space and the light. Six months at the most. But I was wrong. Six weeks after we got this Joint jumpin', we have over 1,600 files uploaded. Unbelievable!
I think it's a good sign. There isn't really anything like this on the Internet - that, a database for black actors, directors, movies and so on. I think the Joint has the chance to be something really big, and I don't mind putting in the work if I feel like we're going to get somewhere. But it's going to take a lot of people, and a lot of resources to get this thing up to speed, and it's going to take money to keep Harpo's standing. Don't get me wrong, we're not in danger of being shut down tomorrow, but this Wiki is growing at an alarming speed. I can't say the same will be true in three weeks. So if you have a few dollars that you can spare, I'd appreciate it if you'd donate to Harpo's. Rest assured, every dime you donate is going towards the website. The money is to pay for bandwith and site space in order to keep the place ad-free and pop-up free, which a lot of people can't claim. It's for making long-distance calls (we've already made four, one of which was over 2 hours long). It's for renting and ordering movies, old newspaper articles, magazines off eBay, and so on. While I have a fairly decent DVD collection, but I don't exactly have my hands on The Blood of Jesus. (Although if someone else does and wants to make a trade, that's what our Swap Meet is for.) The staff is very serious about making this website the go-to reference when it comes to black actors and their projects, but we can't do it alone - and unfortunately, as we are learning, we can't do it for free, either.
Right now, our only method of accepting donations is PayPal, although we're looking into Moneybookers as well, and Bidpay has finally come back (thank heavens!). Also, some of the external links in the articles will take you to Amazon.com. If you follow our link there and purchase something, that's as good as donating, too! For every $1,000 you spend on Amazon, we get like...52 cents or something!
Anyway, thanks for your patience, and we're working as fast as we can to get all of the templates together to make everything run smoothly (mainly the info boxes). Until then, be bold, keep writing, and hit me up on my talk page if you have any questions.
